Armbar : Submission where opponent's arm is hyper-extended
Belt : Promotion system used to denote rank in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu : A close-in fighting system used to disable an opponent safely
BJJ : Acronym for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Gi : Traditional kimono worn by BJJ figthers
Gracie : The founding family of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Grappling : Fighting style defined by close contact, ground work and submissions
Guard : A basic position in BJJ used to control an opponent with your legs
No-gi : BJJ or submission grappling without use of the gi. Usually this means fighters wear a t-shirt or rash guard and board shorts.
Roll(ing) : A practice round of BJJ where students practice techniques and skills in a live simulation
Stripe : A smaller promotion used to rank students in-between belt promotions
Submission : A technique or combination of techniques that place an opponent in jeopardy of being injured, forcing them to tap out
Sweep : A technique used by a bottom fighter, using legs, to reverse positions and end up on top of their opponent
Tap Out : Signal used to concede victory to opponent
Triangle : Choke used to tap out opponent using a fighter's legs
